Description and usage notes:
Very fine and elegant musk with a natural quality, adds depth and roundness to a wide variety of creations but it also has a synergistic effect on the bouquet of a fragrance. At >98% purity this generic is the equivalent of the Firmenich product Exaltolide (as distinct from Exaltolide Total, which is at 92% purity) although not manufactured by Firmenich.
Arctander describes it like this: “Delicately animal, musky and sweet, extremely tenacious odor of outstanding uniformity. Its fixative effect is absolutely unusual in that it is not a physical fixation, but a true fixative and mellowing effect at incredibly low concentration of usage. The effect of perfumes containing this Lactone differ from others in the excellent ‘wearability’ introduced by the Lactone. This is particularly conspicuous when the perfume is applied to the skin.”
According to Philip Kraft, Exaltolide “is probably the commercial musk with the least side notes.” He therefore recommends using it as a benchmark for grasping the typical odor profile of musk odorants.
This is solid at room temperature but melts at about 50 Centigrade – so by default it is supplied at 50% in ethanol – if you prefer pure we make a small additional charge to melt it for you but the price of the material itself is the same – please indicate your preference in the box at checkout. Note that you only need to pay the melting charge once however much Exaltolide you’re buying.

Definitely what musk should smell like.
The lactonic aspect does bring wearability to your accord.
I recommend to use it with Exaltone in traces : beautiful.

Exaltolide is among the finest fixatives in the perfumer’s palette. For many years, it was standard practice to add 0,1 % Exaltolide (0,2% of Exaltolide 50%) to couture-style perfumes, due to this lactone’s ability to round off and fasten a composition. It is less animalic and, in my opinion, more effective in trace amounts than the similar (and also excellent) Exaltone. Its effect is best observed on the skin rather than the blotter.
